Maldives

A string of 1190 islands scattered over the deep blue Indian Ocean - The first glimpse you get of this fascinating atoll- formation confirms two unique aspects of the Republic of Maldives. Ring like coral formations enclosing a lagoon, which gives the Maldives its unique paradise-like appearance.

  • The Maldives has 25 different protected reefs

  • The Maldivian resorts are confined to a ‘one island one resort’policy

  • The built up area of a resort could only be 20% of the land area

  • The height of building in the Maldivian resorts is not above the tallest palm tree

  • Shark fishing is banned in some of the atolls in Maldives

  • Turtles are protected animals and all turtle products are banned

  • The coral suffered mass mortality in 1998 due to bleaching
