A key aim of the programme will be to establish an Environmental Management System (EMS) to ensure the sustainability of the reef environment.

All aspects of an organisations activities have to some extent, an impact on the environment. The relationship between the many different activities can be complex and ensuring a co-ordinated approach to environmental management can be a problem. The EMS approach serves to link different processes together through a network of management actions, operating procedures, documentation and records, to achieve prevention of adverse environmental effects.

Aims are to:

  • Set and maintain a sound environmental policy
  • Identify and control all significant environmental effects
  • Identify all relevant environmental regulatory requirements
  • Establish priorities, set then achieve objectives
  • Monitor performance and audit the effectiveness of the system, then modify systems to meet changing conditions
